NAME:  Cathy Sliwinski

SYMPTOMS:  Sharp stabbing pain in low back, burning pain in right hip for two weeks.

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC?  Co-workers.

WHAT PROBLEMS BROUGHT YOU TO SEE DR. SKAATES?  The horrible, on going pain im my low back and hip.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THESE PROBLEMS?  At least two weeks.

WHAT PREVIOUS CARE DID YOU SEEK?  Self-care, lots of Ibuprofen and heat (didn't help at all).

HOW LONG WAS IT BEFORE YOU NOTICED IMPROVEMENT UNDER CHIROPRACTIC CARE?  Literally, one day!

DID YOUI NOTICE ANY OTHER POSITIVE CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH?  Other movements are not as difficult such as bending over while lifting one leg.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CHIROPRACTIC CARE TO OTHERS?  Absolutely!

PERSONAL COMMENTS:  I came to Dr. Skaates even though I was a bit skeptical.  The pain was nearly unbearable.  I left the office after one adjustment thinking, "Wow!  I think I feel a bit better already".  By the next day my pain was nearly gone!  As an added benefit, Dr. Skaates has also helped with some pain and stiffness in my neck and shoulders.  I'm a dental hygienist, and I spend a good part of my day hunched over my patients.  I thought of this as an occupational hazzard, but Dr. Skaates has made me realize this does not have to be the case.  (I've also seen Dr. Marc and Dr. Leslie.  They've definitely played a part in my recovery.)

NAME:  Mackenzie Betts

SYMPTOMS:  Breech Pregnancy.  During a routine ultrasound when I was about seven months pregnant, my OBGYN found that my baby was breech.  He informed me that if the baby didn't get into the correct position I would have to have a C-Section.  He referred me to Dr. Skaates who is qualified to do the Webster Technique on pregnant women and said that the babies of all the women he referred had changed position before delivery.  I contacted my regular chiropractor who confirmed that the Webster Technique is a proven method for assisting with breech pregnancies.

During my first visit to Dr. Skaates, she explained she would not touch the baby or manipulate the baby's position.  She said her goal was to make adjustments to my body that would make it easier for the baby to naturally get into the right position.  During part of my treatment, Dr. Skaates felt my stomach for twisted ligaments.  I knew exactly when she had found a twisted ligament because if felt like a knot that simply dissolved as she put pressure on the area.

When I got home that night, I felt a strange sensation in my stomach.  I could feel the baby moving in areas of my stomach that I had not felt before.  I think the baby moved into the correct position the first day I received treatment from Dr. Skaates, but there was no way to truly tell until my next ultrasound.  I saw Dr. Skaates twice a week for a month.  My next ultrasound confirmed that the baby had indeed changed position.

I continued to see Dr. Skaates to keep my body in the best condition for the baby.  Dr. Skaates was even able to keep my hips and back from bothering me as much as they had earlier in my pregnancy.  Dr. Skaates has children of her own and understands what a women's body goes through during pregnancy.

On May 24, 2007 I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Calvin.  He was 7 lbs 10 oz. and 20 in. long.  I was able to to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy and give birth vaginally because of Dr. Skaates care.  I would recommend Dr. Skaates to anyone but especially to women who are expecting.

NAME:  Jessica DeChant

SYMPTOMS:  Our newborn son had difficulty nursing from the beginning despite his interest, my previous experience with his older sibling, and repeated visits from the in-hospital lactation consultants.  By three weeks the problem had progressed until he was completely unable to nurse on one side without screaming in pain.  The lactation consultants called him colicky but I was unsatisfied with that as an explanation.

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT CHIROPRACTIC?  A friend repeatedly brought Dr. Skaates up in conversation as having been a blessing to herself and her family.

WHAT PROBLEMS BROUGHT YOU TO SEE DR. SKAATES?  Initially we came years ago for my husband's sudden shoulder and neck pain.  We have come for help with pain and maintenance appointments ever since.  Dr. Skaates has even adjusted our daughter now 3 and was extremely helpfuly during my pregnancy (I wish I had known this during my first pregnancy).

WHAT PREVIOUS CARE DID YOU SEEK?  In our son's case, I had repeatedly consulted with lactation specialists, read every book or pamphlet on nursing that I could find and twice taken him to the pediatrician's to have his nose, ears and throat checked; really anything I could think of.  No one knew anything of what actually turned out to be the problem.  Everyone wanted to console the poor mother of a colicky infant.  It was not until I mentioned the problems to Dr. Skaates during an appointment for myself did someone say, "I can help."

Apparently, his jaw and neck were tense and not in proper alignment causing his extreme discomfort.  This problem was caused wither during birth or possibly by the way he was positioned in utero.  (My OB confirmed that this explanation makes sense for the symptons she sees over and over again in the infants of mothers struggling to nurse.  In other words, this problem may be quite common.

HOW LONG WAS IT BEFORE YOU NOTICED IMPROVEMENT UNDER CHIROPRACTIC CARE?  He was able to eat without pain immediately after his first adjustment.  However, the adjustment didn't hold for very long at all.  We saw Dr. Skaates nearly every day for two weeks with the adjustments holding longer and longer and longer each time.  He was able to nurse pain-free only when everything was in proper position.  I was able to tell when we needed to see Dr. Skaates again when he started pulling away and fussing again during the nursing, though rarley was the pain as pronounced as before we started the adjustments.  We have gradually decreased his visits as the alignment has held longer and longer.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CHIROPRACTIC CARE TO OTHERS?  I would and I have.  As I have said, in our son's case, no one else was able to help or even offer the true explanation for my son's difficulties and pain.  It is horrible to see your infant hurt.  I  wish every mother knew of this problem as a potential explanation for nursing difficulites.  I have even contacted the lactation specialists and told them of the healing I have seen my son receive through chiropractic care.

PERSONAL COMMENTS:  I was initially concerned at the idea of submitting my infant to an adjustment.  Dr. Skaates (as well as Dr. Varckette) has been extremely gentle.  Our son has slept through all but one of the adjustments only showing discomfort during a gentle muscle massage prior to the adjustments (the discomfort is due to the misalignment of his jaw and neck and not the alignment process - it is not present during the same gentle massaging after the adjustment).  I do not believe I would have been able to continue nursing without Dr. Skaates' help.  I am extremely thankful.
